What is Elimite?

Generic Elimite cream (permethrin) five per cent, is a topical agent for scabicidals, administered for treating the infestation with scabies i.e. sarcoptes scabies. The drug is usually available in a white to off-whitish vanishing cream base. Elimite cream is for topical use only.

The permethrin used in the cream has an approximate 3:1 mixture of trans and cis isomers of pyrethroid 3-(2,2-dichloroethenyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid, (3-phenoxyphenyl) methyl ester. The molecular formula of permethrin in the scabicide is C₂₁H₂₀C₁₂O₃. The molecular weight of chemical is 391.29. It sports a light orange-brown or yellow color and is usually a viscous liquid or low melting solid.

Each gram of the cream comprises permethrin 50 mg (five per cent). Inactive ingredients of the permethrin skin cream are carbomer 934 P, butylated hydroxytoluene, fractionated coconut oil, glyceryl monostearate, glycerin, isopropyl myristate, mineral oil, lanolin alcohols, polyoxyethylene cetyl ethers, sodium hydroxide and purified water.
